Every year, the arrival of fall and the beginning of school is announced with the sound of drums, from the marching band, and the first University of Michigan football game of the season! UofM football is a big deal in Ann Arbor and every Saturday starts early as people begin to tailgate (a type of picnic held out of the back of a car in the parking lot of the stadium). Soon the streets are filled with people decked out in gold and blue and Michigan flags are waving everywhere! For the townies, they know that it is best to stay at home and away from the Big House (the nickname of Michigan Stadium) until after the game has started. In the stadium, with a capacity to hold 107,501 people (though due to the current renovations the occupancy is only at 106,201), the sound of the cheers of the Wolverines (the mascot of the University of Michigan and the nickname of the Michigan fans) can be heard all the way on North Campus. Also during the games, the air is often filled with the school's fight song The Victors (take a listen here) as the Michigan Marching Band rocks out with the Student Section (who are all generally dressed in gold t-shirts). Football games at the Big House are truly an experience that cannot be missed and very much an Ann Arbor experience. Have a great week everyone and a great Labor Day weekend.
